Sorting Waste in Kawasaki City¶
Kawasaki City has a detailed waste sorting system with 8 categories, each collected on specific days. Getting it wrong means your bag gets left behind with a sticker explaining why. This page is a practical English reference based on the official 2026 guide (ไปคๅ8ๅนด็).
Starting April 2026, plastic product recycling (ใใฉในใใใฏ่ณๆบ) is expanded city-wide, simplifying plastic sorting significantly.
Kawasaki Waste Sorting App
The official ๅทๅดๅธใใฟๅๅฅใขใใช lets you search any item and tells you exactly how to sort it. Available on App Store and Google Play.
General Rules¶
- Put waste out by 8:00 AM on collection day at your designated collection point (้็ฉๆ).
- Officially, waste should not be put out the night before or after collection. In practice, most people put it out the evening before.
- Collection happens on holidays too (except January 1-3).
- Collection may be cancelled during typhoons or heavy snow; check the city website.
- During disasters: keep sorting as usual. Regular waste collection typically resumes ~3 days after a major disaster. Do not place cleanup waste on roads, as it blocks emergency vehicles.
- Incorrectly sorted items may not be collected. Resources are hand-sorted at the processing center, so correct sorting helps.

Resource Theft Prohibition (่ณๆบ็ฉใฎๆใกๅปใ็ฆๆญข)¶
Do not take recyclables from collection points
In many countries, picking up items left on the curb is perfectly normal. In Kawasaki (and most of Japan), it is illegal. Once recyclables are placed at a collection point, they belong to the city. Taking them carries a fine of up to ยฅ200,000.
This applies to all resource items (cans, bottles, paper, cardboard, old clothes, etc.) and oversized waste (็ฒๅคงใใฟ). Even that chair on the curb is off-limits. The city actively patrols and investigates reports.
Sorting Index (ใใฟใฎๅๅฅใซ่ฟทใฃใใ)¶
The booklet includes a 4-page alphabetical index listing hundreds of items and their correct category. Rather than reproducing it here, use the ๅทๅดๅธใใฟๅๅฅใขใใช (waste sorting app) which has the same data with search:
