Bike Crash, 2026-03-11

Summary

Crashed my bike while attempting to overtake another cyclist who was simultaneously overtaking a pedestrian. To avoid a collision, I braked and moved onto the roadside dirt, lost control, and fell.

Situation

Diagram of the incident

  • M - Me
  • P - Pedestrian
  • C1, C2 - Other cyclists

I was overtaking C1 to the right. C1 was also overtaking P to the right but drifted too far right. To avoid hitting C1, I braked hard and moved onto the dirty roadside (dirt, mud, sand), which caused me to fall.

Root Cause

Me. I attempted a dangerous overtake without accounting for C1 also being in the process of overtaking.

Impact

  • Fell onto dirt and mud
  • Head pain
  • Left side of the body hurt: legs, back, and arm

What Went Well

  • C2 stopped and helped me

What Did Not Go Well

  • C1 left without stopping (C2 was far behind and stopped to help)
  • I did not wear my helmet
  • I was not wearing proper gloves

Lessons Learned

  • When overtaking, slow down and wait until other cyclists have finished their own overtakes before attempting yours
  • Always wear my helmet
  • Always wear proper gloves

Action Items

  • Buy proper cycling gloves
